The Allure of Local

Picture
What is a 100 Mile Diet?

In days before mass transportation, people often could only access supplies that were available within 100 miles of their home, because that was a decent round trip for shopping with a horse and buggy. Most items were either made, or grown by hand and trading with neighbours was not just a way of life, but necessary for survival. Going in to town was a big deal that required a bath and your second-best clothes - the best clothing was reserved for church.

The General Store stocked a range of items from flour to nails, from fabric to tea. Exotic treats, like oranges, were only available in winter, and were treasured Christmas presents. Now the concept of the 100 Mile Diet is experiencing popularity again as more and more people try to be more environmentally responsible and more supportive of local producers. At A Country Christmas Remembered you will be surprised to learn how many items are available within 100 miles.

Our old-fashioned Christmas Farmers' Market features a wonderful assortment of locally produced items including winter vegetables, apple cider, homemade sausages, breads and baked goods. Stock up on seasonal greenery, maple syrup, salad dressings, fudge and homemade candy. You will even find pure wool blankets, beeswax candles and preserves, all made from local products, as well as baking using local cream cheese and other artisan cheeses.
